67 districts sign on so far to Race to the Top application

There are 67 school districts so far that have agreed to participate in the state’s Race to the Top grant application, with agreements signed by all their superintendents and 20 of their local union representatives.

The deadline for participation is today at 5 p.m. and the number of participants is expected to go up some.

Acting Education Commissioner Angela Faherty briefed the state Board of Education on the application at its regular board meeting on Wednesday, when she handed out a list of all participating districts as of May 18. The board unanimously agreed to sign on in support of the state’s application, as is required by the U.S. Department of Education.

The only signature required at the local level for districts to participate is the superintendent, although the U.S. DOE makes it clear that support by school boards and the teachers union will be considered when making grant awards.

The state is hoping to win up to $75 million in federal Race to the Top funds to improve schools in Maine. Its application is due to the U.S. DOE on June 1.
