11:15 a.m.      Briefing with Commissioner Gendron – Status report on “report backs” related to working groups, studies and legislative requests due 2nd session       

               

12:00 p.m.      Working Lunch -- Brainstorming session to establish fall agenda for the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee       

               

1:30 p.m.       Briefing & Discussion with Commissioner Gendron -- Department of Education (“DOE”) budget review, including anticipated spending reductions, DOE priorities for program reductions, and review of spending reductions suggested during meeting with school superintendents     

               

3:00 p.m.       Break  

               

3:15 p.m.       Briefing & Discussion with Commissioner Gendron – Status report on school district reorganization, including the implications of the November referendum vote on repealing the laws governing school district reorganization and preparation for next steps    

               

4:00 p.m.       Briefing & Discussion with Commissioner Gendron and Representative(s) from the Maine Education Association -- Overview of federal Response to Intervention (“RTI”) requirements and a status report on implementation of RTI in Maine schools

10:00 a.m.      Briefing & Discussion with Commissioner Gendron and Richard DeLorenzo, Co-founder of the Reinventing Schools Coalition (“RISC”) -- RISC approach to standards-based design and connections between the work occurring in Maine since the adoption of Learning Results and next steps in transitioning to a standards-based system      

               

11:30 a.m.      Working Lunch – Discussion of Education and Cultural Affairs Committee members’ priorities for 2nd Session of the 124th Legislature    

               

1:00 p.m.       Briefing & Discussion with University of Maine System (“UMS”) Chancellor Richard Pattenaude, , Rebecca Wyke, UMS Vice Chancellor for Finance & Administration, and John Lisnik, Assistant to the Chancellor for Governmental Relations -- Overview of the reports prepared for the Chancellor and Board of Trustees under the “New Challenges, New Directions” initiative, including the Board of Trustees directives to the Chancellor to implement a plan to identify an economically sustainable path for the UMS that can meet the needs of Maine people
